What is RFM?
RFM is a segmentation method that scores players on three core metrics:
- Recency — when was the last activity?
- Frequency — how often do they transact?
- Monetary — how much have they deposited in total?
Each player is scored on all three axes, and the combination of those scores determines which segment they fall into. The strength of the method is its simplicity: it produces meaningful groups from transaction data alone, without building a complex model.
Why RFM segmentation?
Sending the same campaign to every player wastes budget and degrades the player experience. Sending a VIP offer to an account that has not played in six months, and offering a welcome bonus to someone who deposits every week, are two faces of the same mistake.
With RFM:
- VIP offers for the Champions segment
- Win-back campaigns for the At Risk segment
- Welcome flows for the New Players segment
Three axes, different meanings
| State | R | F | M | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Champions | High | High | High | Protect: priority support, special terms |
| Loyal | Mid | High | Mid | Reward frequency, move towards VIP |
| At risk | Low | High | High | Urgent win-back — the most valuable loss candidate |
| Dormant | Low | Low | High | Reactivation with a personalised offer |
| New | High | Low | Low | Build the habit: focus on the second deposit |
The third row is the critical one. A high-value player who has not returned for a while is the most expensive segment to lose, and usually the one noticed last.
Static list versus dynamic segment
A segment pulled into a spreadsheet is a photograph of the moment it was pulled. The following week, player behaviour changes and the list does not. The campaign reaches the wrong group.
A dynamic segment updates itself: the moment behaviour changes, the segment changes, and the flow automatically targets the right group. There is no list to refresh by hand.
Segmentation alone is not enough
The value of segmentation appears when it triggers the next step. Otherwise all you have is a nice report.
The Journey module is exactly where this happens: a segment triggers a flow, the flow is built from trigger, condition, action and AI-decision nodes, and the outcome is measured against a target event and a control group. That turns "the campaign worked" into something measurable. Journey is one of the features of the Professional package.
Frequency caps and quiet hours
The right segment loses its value with the wrong timing. If the same player receives three messages a day, the result is negative no matter how accurate the segment is. In Journey flows, frequency caps, quiet hours and channel consent are defined inside the flow itself, so they do not have to be reconsidered for every campaign.
RFM with CoCrm.ai
CoCrm.ai calculates and updates RFM segments automatically. The Enterprise package adds predictive segmentation with AI: it forecasts which segment a player is about to move into, so the intervention happens before the loss does.
